In truth, she didn’t know what she would do, what she should do, or what she wanted to do. That last one was the most difficult to answer.

As ensaak of Ilios, she should do everything in her power to take back her city. As a dutiful daughter of the city, she would. But…what did that mean? Did it include sacrificing Ashek? Having him tie his fate to the city? Letting him take the city?

She thought of Ashek’s words in the canyon, “I’ve loved you since the Lakeshan moisture fields.”

He was injured and battered now, but she still wanted him, too. His injuries would give her time, but he would heal. And once he did…he would want answers.

“Ensaak?” Gilsazi spoke the title gently, as one would speak the name of someone to wake them on a lazy morning.

“Yes.” Talitha rubbed her stinging eyes. “What is it?”

  “Are you ready?”

  “Yes.”

The Dunedrifters had collected Ashek and remounted, adjusting the arrangement of the animals so that one of the men would ride alongside Ashek’s sirrush to steady him. Emalek looked over the top of Ashek’s sirrush, one brow arched as he studied Talitha and Gilsazi.

The tavrosi nodded and that seemed to satisfy him.

Their group turned toward the west, in the opposite direction of the fleeing farmers. Without a cheer, with only the rustle of the sirrush’s feet to mark the sound, they rode away into dunes.

How much is a warlord’s inheritance worth?

Talitha is the rightful ensaak of Ilios, but betrayal has left her a fugitive far from her grandfather’s city. With the usurper supported by the crazed priest of the war goddess, Talitha needs an army to free her people, even if it means pledging allegiance to another ruler.

Ashek is leader of the Hudspethites and was willing to die for Talitha. But he refuses to fight for her city unless she agrees to pledge loyalty to the Hudspethite tribe—and to him. Forced to make a decision, Talitha must choose what she is willing to give up and what she is willing to gain as they near the final battle for Ilios.

Ensaak is a 30,000 word novella and the fourth installment in the all-new Warlords of the Sandsea romance adventure series.
